Corner Sofa vs 3+2 Seater: Which Is Right for Your Home?

Published 2026-03-15 · Portsmouth Furniture Centre

It's one of the most common questions we hear at our Portsmouth showroom — should I go for a corner sofa or a traditional 3+2 seater set? There's no one-size-fits-all answer, but here's what we've learned from over a decade of helping customers choose.

Space & Layout

Corner sofas are brilliant for open-plan living areas and larger rooms where you want one continuous seating area. They tuck neatly into an L-shape, making great use of corner space that would otherwise sit empty. For rooms where you want a more flexible layout — maybe you'd like to rearrange from time to time, or you have two separate seating areas — a 3+2 set gives you that freedom. You can position them opposite each other, at right angles, or even put one in a different room entirely.

Getting It Through the Door

This is where a lot of people assume a 3+2 set has the advantage, but actually the opposite is often true. A corner sofa breaks down into separate sections for delivery — the corner piece, the left arm, the right arm — so each piece is usually smaller and easier to manoeuvre than a full 3-seater sofa, which comes as one piece. If you've got tight hallways, narrow staircases, or awkward doorways (and let's be honest, plenty of Portsmouth terraces do), a corner sofa can actually be the easier option to get in. That said, always measure your access before ordering — our delivery team are experienced but they can't bend physics.

Comfort & Socialising

Corner sofas are great for family movie nights and casual lounging — everyone can stretch out without fighting for space. The L-shape also creates a natural social area where people can face each other. A 3+2 set feels more structured and works well if you prefer defined seating positions. Some people find it more comfortable having their own distinct sofa rather than sharing a long run.

Price

At Portsmouth Furniture Centre, our sofa sets typically range from £895 to £1,650 for both 3+2 combinations and corner units, so there's not a massive price difference. It really comes down to what suits your space and lifestyle. Our Brody is one of our best-selling U-shape corners, while the Petra is a popular L-shape option.

Our Advice

Come into the showroom and sit on both. Comfort is personal — photos don't tell you how a sofa feels. Bring your room measurements and we'll help you figure out what fits. We've got over 50 sofas on display and our team genuinely enjoys helping people find the right one.
